North Lakes, situated in the Moreton Bay Region approximately 26 kilometres north of Brisbane, is a contemporary suburb that has experienced significant growth since its establishment. Originally part of Mango Hill, North Lakes was officially gazetted as a separate suburb in 2006. The area was developed as a master-planned community, transforming former farmland into a residential and commercial hub. The development, initiated in 1999, was led by commercial developers Lend Lease and Lensworth, under the guidance of the then Pine Rivers Shire Council. North Lakes has become a prominent example of modern suburban planning, featuring a blend of residential areas, commercial centres, and recreational spaces. The suburb is home to major retail establishments, including Queensland's first Costco and the second IKEA store in the state, both located within the Westfield North Lakes shopping centre. The community also boasts extensive parklands, lakes, and over 80 kilometres of bike tracks and pathways, contributing to its family-friendly reputation. However, the rapid development and favourable climate of North Lakes have also made it susceptible to invasive species, notably the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta). These pests pose significant risks to the environment, agriculture, and public health. In response, the Queensland Government has implemented biosecurity measures, including designating North Lakes as part of a fire ant biosecurity zone. Residents are encouraged to report sightings and, in some cases, are provided with treatment kits to manage infestations. Effective pest management is crucial in maintaining the safety and liveability of North Lakes. Specialised services play a vital role in controlling the spread of fire ants, ensuring that the suburb continues to thrive as a well-planned and sustainable community.
